Taking care of your hair during winter is crucial as the cold and dry weather can lead to various hair-related issues such as dryness, frizz, and breakage. Join us this month as our hair salon shares some of our favorite tips on how to maintain the health of your hair throughout the winter season!
Hydration is Key
Winter air tends to be dry, which can drain the moisture from your hair. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and use hydrating hair products. We recommend looking for shampoos and conditioners that specifically mention moisture or hydration.
Use Lukewarm Water
Hot water can further dry out your hair and scalp. As tempting as it is to get in a steaming hot shower after a chilly winter day, try to opt for lukewarm water when washing your hair. This will help to retain natural oils and prevent excessive dryness.
Deep Conditioning
Integrate deep conditioning treatments into your hair care routine. Use a moisturizing hair mask or deep conditioner once a week to restore moisture and repair any damage caused by the harsh weather.
Protect Your Hair from the Elements
When heading outdoors, protect your hair from harsh winds and cold temperatures. Consider wearing a hat or a scarf to shield your locks from the elements. This prevents breakage and split ends. And most importantly, avoid going outdoors with wet hair! The cold weather will also cause your strands to lose moisture and become more brittle. If you don’t like to use heat on your hair, we at least recommend blow drying it on a cool setting before you leave the house.
Trim Regularly
Regular trims are essential to maintain healthy hair. Trimming helps get rid of split ends and prevents them from traveling up the hair shaft. It’s best to aim for a trim every 6-8 weeks to help preserve the length and health of your hair.
Avoid Heat Styling
Excessive use of heat styling tools can contribute to dryness and damage. Try to minimize the use of hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. When you do use them, make sure to always apply a heat protectant to minimize damage.
Oil Treatments
Consider incorporating oil treatments into your routine. Almond oil, argan oil, diluted rosemary oil, and olive oil are just a few excellent choices. Apply the oil to your hair on the scalp and ends, leave it on for a few hours or overnight, and then wash it out for added nourishment.
